What are removable dentures?

Spread the love

Removable dentures also referred to as false teeth or plates are prosthetic teeth made of metal, acrylic or nylon which are fitted over the gums worn as a common treatment alternative for missing teeth and surrounding tissues to provide the patient with the impression of having a full set of teeth. These dentures are versatile in replacing any number of missing teeth as well as to fill out the contours of the face and lips, which might shrink inward when one loses multiple teeth. The denture base is usually made of acrylic plastic or metal that can be tinted to match the patient’s natural existing gum tissues. The denture teeth are made of either acrylic or ceramic. Dentures should be removed out of the mouth before going to bed and for cleaning and will also need regular maintenance and must be cleaned using a soft toothbrush or denture paste to get rid of food plaque and debris.

Below are some of the removable denture types:

  • Cast metal framework removable partial dentures
  • Plastic partial dentures
  • Acrylic clasp removable partial dentures
  • Flexible partial denture
  • – Fixed bridge
  • – Implant-supported fixed bridge

How does removable denture work?

Removable partial dentures consist of a gum-colored base made of plastic resin, which will be fitted over the remaining alveolar ridge that formerly held the teeth. The prosthetic teeth projecting from the base are designed in such a way to look and function just as your normal natural teeth. Dentures provide better hold in place primarily by the suctioning effect of their close fit against the alveolar ridges therefore it is crucial that they are fitted properly. In some cases, partial dentures are also made of acrylic and metal-like framework dentures, and they consist of wire clasps. These wire clasps help the dentures to attach and maintain a better position to the remaining natural teeth. These are typically used as cost-effective alternatives than metal partial dentures.

At first, partial dentures may feel a little awkward and may require some time in the start getting used to in terms of talking and eating. However, over time, the nerves, muscles and ligaments of the mouth will learn to work in new ways, which allows them to function normally. Along with the support for facial skeleton and the soft tissues of the lips and cheeks, they also provide a solid grip allowing for a better smile and a more youthful appearance.
