Cast Partials

Cast partial denture is a removable partial denture made up of metal cast framework that contains artificial teeth set in an acrylic resin. It is stronger, more durable than the usual acrylic dentures. It is more expensive and complexly formed, due to the various processes involved and amount of time required for cast partial denture. Each denture is designed for individual patients with their specific measurement.

Indications for a cast partial denture are:

  • Loss of some or multiple teeth.
  • No teeth behind the edentulous space.
  • Remaining teeth periodontal (gum) health is excellent.
  • Injury to the jaw bone.
  • When the remaining teeth have to be stabilized against lateral and anterior-posterior forces.
  • Patient desires

Procedures Of Fabricating a Cast Partial Denture

The steps for fabricating a cast partial denture need several appointments for final placement. Each denture is specially designed for you with a specific measurement. Here are the some of the steps you might go during cast partial denture:

First dental visit:

  • Doctor will take impression of upper & lower dental arches
  • Then, study models are fabricated & uniquely designed on the study models.

Second dental visit:

  • Doctor will perform a procedure called mouth preparation. Mouth preparation involves the modification of the shape of some teeth so that the final cast partial denture may be retained and stabilized.
  • Then, dental impressions will be taken after mouth preparation and make the master models.
  • Mental cast framework is designed and fabricated by dental technicians in dental laboratories.

Third dental visit:

  • Mental framework is tested for fit & retention in the patient’s mouth.
  • Doctors will record the patient’s bite which is also called bite registration.
  • Dentists will choose the color of the artificial teeth based on the patent natural teeth.
  • Then, the dental technician will place the artificial teeth on the trail denture based on the patient’s bite.

Fourth dental visit:

  • Trial dentures are tired in the patient’s mouth.
  • Then, trial denture is fit, retention, stability, phonetics and aesthetics are tested and changed.
  • After the try-in, trail dentures will be sent to the dental laboratory for the final cast partial dentures.

Fifth dental visit:

  • Doctor will place the final cast partial denture in the patient’s mouth.
  • Final cast denture is fit, stabilized, retention, aesthetic and phonetics are checked and corrected.
  • Then, the bite of the patient is checked as needed.
  • Doctor will give instructions to the patient on how to care for their denture.

Sixth dental visit:

  • After a week of denture insertion, the patent is called for a denture review.
  • Doctor will ask the patient whether the dentures are causing any problem or not.
  • Again fitting, stabilization, retention, phonetics is aesthetically checked and adjusted.
  • Then, the doctor will examine the patient’s bite and modify it as necessary.

Advantage of a cast partial denture:

  • Minimal tissue damage in the jaw
  • Prevent other teeth from shifting
  • Reliable and durable than acrylic denture
  • Support the lips and cheeks
  • Procedure requires less relining and rebasing of the denture

Disadvantage of Cast Partial denture:

  • It is expensive
  • Hard to repair
  • Fabrication process is complicated
  • Required more dental visits and longer time for the fabrication
  • Heavy and annoying due to the metal cast frame work
  • Required constant maintenance
  • It is easily broken or damaged
