Immediate denture

Immediate denture is a denture inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of the natural teeth. It is also called same day denture that is placed in the patient’s mouth right away after the extraction of your teeth. Immediate denture is also called the former temporary denture because the patient will have teeth while awaiting the permanent dentures.

It is the best solution when complete removal of your remaining teeth is unavoidable. It will protect your gum tissue and help your mouth heal from the extraction. Immediate dentures aren’t custom-fitted like permanent dentures.

Immediate denture is very complicated to design and it will go through few trials before final extraction. After the immediate denture patient requires follow up or adjustments and re-fitting during the healing process. It is a same day denture but the immediate denture cost is about 25% more expensive than conventional denture. For the immediate denture treatment, not every patient is a candidate. Some people may be advised against this treatment, due to general health conditions or oral problems.

Advantages of immediate denture

There are several advantages of immediate denture:

  •  Protect the gum tissue & help heal from the extraction
  •  It is easier to duplicate the color, shape and arrangement of patient natural teeth
  • Immediately fill gaps after the extraction of teeth
  • It helps to minimize gum bleeding
  • Establish the speech patterns easily
  • Prevents patient embarrassment
  • Betterment in chewing pattern
  • Quick adjustment to the denture
  • Less change in muscle and facial structure

Disadvantage of immediate denture

  • It is expensive than other dentures
  • Required more maintenance work
  • It doesn’t fit always like other dentures
  • Soreness or irritation
  •  It doesn’t feel like natural teeth
  • Slipping or moving while talking or eating
  • Need to wear it for a long period unless permanent denture doesn’t arrive.

Types of immediate denture are:

  • Conventional immediate denture (CID): It is intended as the long-term prosthesis. It is good retention and stability at placement which is maintained during healing. They cost less than another immediate denture.
  • Interim immediate denture (IID): It is transitional or short-term prosthesis and after healing a second denture is made and kept it as a spare denture. It has fair retention and stability at insertion which is improved by relines. The cost is high due to two dentures.
  • Transitional immediate denture (TID): It is same as interim immediate denture, because when all the natural teeth have been removed then artificial teeth will be added.
