Three different types of dental implant.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to replace missing teeth and provide a strong and stable foundation for replacement teeth or dental prostheses. They are designed to match the natural teeth in appearance and function. Dental implant materials are made of biocompatible materials, mostly titanium, which allows them to fuse with the jawbone through an osseointegration process. The materials have been made in the field of dental implantology to address specific patient needs and concerns.
Full mouth dental is also known as full arch dental implant or full mouth reconstruction with dental implants. It is a comprehensive dental treatment that involves replacing all of a patient’s missing or severely damaged teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. This procedure is an effective solution for individuals who have lost most or all of their natural teeth due to various reasons, such as extensive decay, gum disease, trauma, or congenital conditions.
Types of dental implants
Dental implants vary in design, materials used, and the way they are placed in the jawbone. Here are the three different types of dental implants :
- Endosteal Implants: Endosteal implants are the most common type of dental implant. They are surgically placed directly into the jawbone. These implants are typically made of titanium and resemble small screws or cylinders. Once the implant is inserted, the surrounding bone will naturally fuse to it through a process called osseointegration, creating a sturdy foundation for the replacement tooth or dental prosthesis.
- Subperiosteal Implants: These implants are an alternative option for patients with insufficient bone height in the jaw to support endosteal implants. Instead of being inserted into the jawbone, subperiosteal implants are placed on or above the jawbone but beneath the gums. A metal frame is custom-made to fit the shape of the jawbone, and it is positioned under the gum tissue. Over time, the bone grows around the metal frame, securing it firmly in place. Once the healing process is complete, replacement teeth are mounted onto the metal framework.
- All-on-4 Implants: The All-on-4 dental implant technique is a specific treatment concept designed for patients who are missing all or most of their teeth in a dental arch. It involves the strategic placement of four implants in a way that maximizes the use of available bone, typically in the upper or lower jaw. These implants provide sufficient support for a full set of fixed replacement teeth, often in the form of a denture or bridge. All-on-4 implants are known for their ability to provide a cost-effective and efficient solution for complete tooth replacement.
